Dog scratching badly, tried remedies. How to help her itchy skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 10 days old | 30 lbs

My dog is a female and her breed is a lab/rottweiler mix. She will be one years old in September. She is scratching herself so bad that she looks like she has the mange. I have tried tea tree oil, lavender, oatmeal baths, and benadryl at night. She also has like a blister on her bottom lip. I was wondering if there is anything else I can try to help her from stop itching so much. I am guessing it is hot spots due to she stays outside during the day and inside at night.

Poor Roxie! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. Hair loss and itching on the lower back like this is often a sign of flea allergies - so if she isn't already on a good quality flea preventative such as Nexgard or Bravecto, this is the first thing I would suggest. If you're positive that she doesn't have fleas, then it's possible that she has food allergies, an allergy to something in the environment, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). All of these problems will require prescription medication from your vet to treat effectively, so I would recommend taking her in for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.
