Dog's stomach gurgling, not eating, and mopey. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

Marcus woke up fine this morning, but wasn't interested in his food, we feed him and Rhody once in the morning, once at night. His stomach has been gurgling loudly for a couple hours and he's mopey. He goes thru this a couple of times a month, it just never this loud. I'm retired on a fixed income, don't want to take him to the vet if it's not necessary. He's not throwing up, not sure about diarrhea cause it's been raining her but his backside doesn't show any evidence of it. What should I do?

It sounds like he is possibly having some digestion problems. I would consider a food change for him if he is on a lower quality food. Some high quality food suggestions are: Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. You want to go with a sensitive stomach formula as well, because these are generally more easily digestible. If he isn't vomiting or having diarrhea, then you can do a slow transiiton on to his new food over the next 1-2 weeks. You can also offer him some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for the next few days to see if this can settle his stomach while you try to get his food transiitoned. A probiotic added to his food can also help with digestion. I recommend the over the counter Culturelle from your local pharmacy. I hope that this helps and hope that Marcus's digestion is improved soon! Best wishes and take care.
