My dog favors his back leg after jumping. Could it be luxating patella?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 6 lbs

My dog keeps favoring his right back leg! He does jump down from the couch and bed, which I know I shouldn’t. He gets around with no aid but stops quickly to sit and lick. Could this be luxating patella? I have a couple of videos that show better of his routine but, photos is all I am able to download. No whimper, whine and let’s me touch his leg with no pain reaction. Eats, drinks and still goes to the bathroom. Nothing is out of place that I see.

I am sorry to hear about Tripp. A luxating patella is a possibility in a small breed dog with hind leg lameness which you can read more about at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952066. We also worry about issues with the cruciate ligament in the knee or a torn meniscus https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952244. I would recommend bringing Tripp into the vet for an exam. They will be able to palpate right away if a luxating patella is the issue. If it is not, they will likely recommend an x-ray to evaluate the leg and help guide treatment.
