My dog's paw stitches look infected. Does he need an urgent vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 100 lbs

My dog recently had sutures placed along his paw due to a deep laceration. I am unsure if the incision is infected and would like to know if I need to take time off tomorrow to take him to a vet.

I think you should take him in tomorrow. The edges of the wound are separating and it does look inflamed and may be infected. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I would take him in. Make sure that you are keeping an E-collar (cone of shame) on him so that he cannot lick it or bite at it, and restrict his activity to leash walks only for the purpose of going to the bathroom. The purpose of decreased activity is to minimize stress on the repair while it is trying to heal. Best of luck to you and Thor. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
