How to treat an infected elbow callus sore on my dog at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Male | neutered | 140 lbs

One of my Alaskan Malamute's elbow calluses has developed an open sore on it. I have been putting coconut oil on it several times a day to treat it as I will not get paid for another few weeks and do not have the money to take him to the vet quite yet. Should I be worried about infection and how can I treat it until I can take him to the vet?

You can look for an over the counter dog wound wash or ointment (there are some available at PetCo and other pet stores) that contains an antiseptic such as chlorhexadine, and use that 1-2 times a day. I would not recommend bandaging it, as that may trap moisture and actually make the irritation worse. Based on how it looks right now I think its reasonable to try to treat it at home for a week or 2, but if it is not improving or if it is getting worse, please see your vet. I would also recommend ensuring he lays on soft bedding or rugs; do not have him on hard floors or outside on dirt or concrete. A raised outdoor bed would be fine. Lastly, get an E-collar (cone of shame) on him. This will prevent him from licking at it, which will only make it worse. Best of luck with him!
