Winston has been scratching at his ear a lot, and shaking his head. One ear is clean, but the other had dried blood, something that could be wax and or blood mixed, and kinda grainy black pieces in it. Are there things we can try before taking him to vet?

I am sorry to hear about Winston! We could have a variety of things causing this issue, including a bacterial or yeast infection in the ear, ear mites, or a foreign object in the ear causing irritation. You could try cleaning the ear with an ear cleaning solution, or try an enzymatic product such as Zymox Otic HC (available online and at some stores), but if the ear is not improving within a few days, a visit to the vet is recommended.
