My dog has black poop and is vomiting blood. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Basenji | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 48 lbs

My pet 7 yrs old basenji, in last 3 days , her poop has slowly turned dark , first it was mucus black with her regular poop, then now darker, yesterday night she vomited with traces of what appeared like dried blood, today she vomited with traces of fresh spots if blood , she has gone off food , drinks water. Please tell me, what am I looking at ? A very concerned parent

This does sound very concerning. Black stool can occur secondary to digested blood, and blood in vomit can be either bright red if fresh or look like coffee grounds if digested. This can happen if there is a foreign object or mass in the stomach, if there is an ulcer, if there is kidney disease or pancreatitis or if certain toxins are ingested. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as you can. They may recommend blood work and x-rays to start and can start some symptomatic medication as well.
