Why is my dog constantly chewing his paws and tail? What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 months and 18 days old

Recently, I've been finding Jasper chewing on his paws and tail. He goes up and down them in quick little bites as if he's eating corn on the cob haha, why does he do this?

He could be chewing from fleas, mites, allergies, or an infection. You could bathe him with a shampoo like Duoxo Calm and see if that helps. Otherwise, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can do a cytology, culture, and/or skin scrape to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. Also, I recommend using a good flea prevention like NexGard, Credelio, Frontline, Advantage to help prevent fleas and ticks.
