My dog's testicles didn't drop. Is neutering needed to prevent cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

My 3 year old shihtzu male puppy has subcut testicals (one & a half ) in his stomach should we get him neutered? The vet says yes cause it might cause tumor/cancer but my some friends & the guy we took him from says no need they will live the vet just wants to earn money, apart from that when I rub on his testicals he feels nice ... so please suggest should we get the operation done or no??

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Oreo has a retained testicle (hasn't dropped in to scrotum) then it should be removed. The testicle needs to be at a lower temperature than the body. There is a risk for the retained testicle to become cancerous over time. Put your trust in to your Vet and medical professionals. Have a great night

Retained testicles in dogs can turn into tumors, but it is usually a benign Sertoli cell tumor. Still they occupy space and are uncomfortable and will require surgery to remove, so neutering him now while it's only a retained testicle is much easier on him and you than waiting until something happens. Sometimes the testicle is low enough it isn't hard to get to, sometimes they have to go into the belly, like a spay, to locate and remove it. If he is healthy, now is the best time to get this done.
