My chihuahua has a painful white circle on her eye. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

My deer head chihuahua has a white circle on her eye. She winces in pain sometimes randomly without anything touching it. I accidently did touch it though and she yowled loudly in pain. Tears start to form around her eye also. She sometimes closes the eye but sometimes opens it. She also sometimes touches it with her paw for no reason. I need help knowing what it is. My parents think it might be a scratch from another animal but I think it's a skin tag or cyst on her eye. What can help her eye?

I am sorry to hear about your dog. It is tough to evaluate eyes with a photograph but it almost looks like she could have an abscess or foreign body in her cornea. I would recommend bringing her in to her vet as soon as possible, as eyes are best treated early to have the best chance at preserving vision and the eye! The vet will examine the area and with an in-person exam and special tools for examining the eye can better determine the problem and how to proceed with treatment.
