My puppy has a dislocated growth plate. Will it heal on its own?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 7 months and 24 days old | 50 lbs

Hi my 7 month old Bernese has been limping and not putting any weight on her back right leg. We went to the vet and had x-rays and were told her growth plate is dislocated. We were told she should rest for 5 weeks and where she is young and still growing it may re-fuse on its own. If it does not fuse by 5 weeks time, she may need surgery. Wondering about a second opinion and how serious this is? and how likely it will heal on its own?

The displacement here is very mild and it is likely with rest that it will fuse again but any joint injuries increase the risk of early onset arthritis and this will be more severe should it slip any further. An urgent review by a specialist orthopedic surgeon would be recommended to review all possible options and likely outcomes, especially in a giant breed such as Cali
