My dog's had diarrhea for a week, home remedies failed. No vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea for about a week now. It is currently orangish color with a good amount of mucus on it. She goes around 3 times a day and it looks the same. We found out it was a new type of organic dog food we had tried for her that was making a lot of dogs sick. We took her off the food and have been feeding her white rice with boiled chicken for the past couple of days with no luck. What else can I do without taking her to the vet? I don’t have hundreds of dollars for a vet visit.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Athena. If she is otherwise acting normal, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Be sure to provide her with plenty of water though so that she does not become dehydrated. This will allow her gastrointestinal tract to rest and can potentially resolve the diarrhea. Then reintroduce food slowly with very small meals. If this does not work and the diarrhea persists, then she will need to see her veterinarian. Dogs will develop a bacterial overgrowth secondary to GI upset such as from the diet change. She may need an antibiotic to resolve this for her. I hope this information helps!
