Luna has been having diarrhea for a while because of a medication she was taking (stopped a week ago) and today I noticed she's leaking diarrhea, and her anus seems irritated and more pink than usual. I'm calling the vet tomorrow but what could it be, and what should I do to make it better for her?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm so sorry to hear about Luna - it sounds like she has had a rough go of things lately. Diarrhea is a very non-specific signs so I'm afraid the possibilities are numerous. Intestinal worms, inflammatory bowel disease, food sensitivity, allergic reaction, colitis from stress, diet charge or indiscretion (stealing people food, etc), toxin, or others are all on the list. For tonight, just gently clean her up with a baby wipe or tissue. You can apply a little lanolin or olive oil to soothe the rump. A little ice pack (wrapped in a paper towel or thin kitchen towel) pressed to the anus can help with the pain and inflammation as well. Best of luck to you and Luna!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Mink has been having issues with diarrhea. Excessive straining from diarrhea can cause rectal inflammation/irritation, which could explain what you are seeing. Additionally, cats can have issues with their anal glands, which can cause the rectum to look puffy. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to treat the diarrhea (which may subsequently help his rectal inflammation) and get his anal glands checked to ensure they are not infected. In the meantime, a small amount of topical desitin (or similar product) may help him find relief. Good luck!
