My new kitten is sneezing a lot. Is it a cold or allergies? Should I worry?

Kitty cold or just dust? We just got two kittens yesterday. One sneezed once in awhile but the other is sneezing more often. There's no lethargy, or loss is eating. The only symptom seems to be sneezing that we can tell right now. We got s new couch the day before. Wondering if the sneezing is kitty cold or just the furniture dust. Should we get the one sneezing more often checked out or just monitor it for now? Should we take him for a car ride away from the furniture to see if it improves?

I would just monitor them for now. You can also keep them out of the room with the couch for a few days while airing out the room. Most likely they have a mild upper respiratory infection which is common in kittens. As long as they are eating and playing they will recover with out treatment. Should they stop eating or become lethargic then I would bring them in for an exam. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your kittens.

I'm sorry to hear Ida is having issues. Upper respiratory infections in cats frequently have an underlying viral cause, which is not curable and is lifelong, but does not typically shorten lifespan. When the virus comes out of remission, it predisposes them to secondary bacterial infections, resulting in eye and nasal discharge. These cats then need antibiotics to treat he secondary bacterial infection. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to assess if she does have an infection, any treatment that she may need, and possibly starting a supplement to help support her immune system. Good luck!

She may be fighting an upper respiratory infection or allergies. I would monitor this and if it does not resolve within 3-5 days or it significantly worsens, I would take her in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As long as Leia is eating, drinking and not breathing with difficulty make an appointment Monday for her to get checked. Usually sneezing, congestion and sometimes a cough is from a viral upper respiratory infection. The Vet usually starts an antibiotic to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Good luck!
