My puppy's eye looks scratched. When should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 27 days old | 7 lbs

hello! I was playing with my puppy and thought I saw something that looked like a small scratch on her eye: the clear part. But this morning it’s not as evident but I still think I see something. Perhaps it’s mucus? How do I know if I need to take her in to be checked out? I know that cornea scratches are irritating and in humans cause redness , drainage and discomfort. Puppy seems fine. No squinting, normal tearing and eye movements.

Good morning! Yes, You are right that redness, squinting, and discharge are all signs of a corneal scratch and should be seen right away. If you have any concerns an appointment with a veterinarian is always a good plan. However, without any ocular symptoms there is probably no trauma. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
