Unspayed cat not eating or drinking after heat. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 5 lbs

My cat has just turned one year old, and has been having heats regularly since around six months of age. After the most recent heat, she has since stopped eating and drinking. There is no chance of pregnancy.

She could have a uterine infection which can become very serious and even life threatening. I recommend a veterinary exam right away. Often they need to have surgery to remove the infected uterus and be put on fluids and antibiotics. This is a common complication of unspayed females that have many heat cycles without getting pregnant.
