My chinchilla won't eat hay or chew wood. Is it dental pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 1lb

Buddy is not eating his hay or chewing on wood like he used to we think he may have hurt his jaw when he jumped out of his cage but he pulls on the cardboard we put up to block door and he runs around and jumps and plays as he used to .He just doesn't seem to be eating like before. I make up soft food and he eats off spoon when he wants to and will eat his veggi treats .He is going potty still like before(both) is there anything more we can do for him when he drinks water he is wet under chin

You should have Buddy's teeth checked. Chinchillas can get tooth problems (too long, abscessed, malocclusion) and then will not eat properly any more since it either hurts to eat or it is simply impossible for them to eat hay or other harder food. In order to avoid more damage and him losing too much weight, you should take him to a veterinarian who is familiar with chinchillas and can give him a good dental exam.
