Is Royal Canin Aging 12+ good for my senior cat's kidney health?

Hi! Tony has been eating wet/canned royal canin aging 12+ , he’s 18 years old , and I wanted an opinion on this food as far as senior diets go. My vet had me try rx veterinary hills g/d canned food but he didn’t like it. is the aging 12+ a good senior diet option for a food lower in phosphorus and sodium? Thx!

Great question! One of the benefits of Royal Canin aging 12+ is that helps support renal health by having reduced phosphorus. It doesn't say if it's lower in sodium, but it is an excellent food for older cats and has the reduced phosphorus which is important given the prevalence of kidney disease in older cats. I recommend it as a food option for Tony. I hope this helps!

Yes, it is ok to eat renal food, but only as a treat or supplement to the main diet of Hills Rx Senior. Renal food is lower in protein than normal cat food since the kidneys can't handle excess protein when they are failing. So it would be best for long-term health if Tony gets plenty of protein, which is in the senior diet!

Hi and thank you for your nutrition question! Out of the percentages you mentioned above, I see a 0.35%, a 0.125% and a 0.6% phosphorus. The least % out of all three of these would be the 0.125% and thus the least amount of phosphorus out of all the 3 different food types you mentioned.. I would be inclined then to get the Royal Canin Aging 12+ (0.125%) food. I hope this has helped. Best of luck to you and Tony!

Royal Canin carries a diet called Senior Consult which has restricted Phos but not as low as the renal diets so it is not appropriate to feed instead of the renal diets. I recommend to discuss this option with your vet before making any diet changes since they are the most familiar with Tony's history. You may ask your vet about an appetite stimulant such as mirtazapine. Many renal cats want variety. Many owners will keep several renal food options and will switch the kibble every week to keep it interesting. Most cats will go back to eating a diet that they had previously stopped eating so you may try circling back. You should also ask about the return policy when purchasing the food in case Tony won't eat the food. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hello, & thank you using Boop by Petco. The most important thing for you to consider is the palatability of food for Tony. The best food for the kidneys will do him no good if he will not eat it. That being said, I think the Sci. Diet Adult 7+ is an excellent choice. The phosphorous level is actually a bit lower or about the same than in some of the Royal Canin renal diets. He should do quite well on this. Take care.

This food is not necessarily considered to be a senior diet, however it is appropriate for adult cats and in this case I would not recommend switching to another diet. Senior diets tend to have fewer calories and sometimes have different nutrients and supplements than adult foods. If Trixie is overweight you can try cutting back on the amount of food offered during the day. Royal Canin select protein foods already have increased levels of fatty acids, and you could ask your vet if Trixie might benefit from a dietary supplement for joint health or a probiotic that would be okay with her IBD.

Great question! Prescription diet: Hills K/D, Purina NF, or Royal Canin renal diets- they make 3 canned versions and 3 dry versions for different cat preferences. Non-prescription: Hills Mature diets, Iams mature diets, or Purina One mature diets. Honestly, the most important thing your cat can do is eat! If it is between eating a recommended diet or eating anything, I choose eating anything. I hope that helps. Kisses to Tony!

The joint support you get is mainly from green mussel extract and omega 3 fatty acids. The phosphorus content has been lowered to help ease the stress o n the kidneys as well. Yes, mature or senior cat formulas from either Hill's Science Diet, Purina One, or Purina ProPlan are all good choices for senior cats in the earliest stages of kidney disease. Generally speaking, most of these senior diets are formulated with slightly lower protein content and less phosphorous than typical diets for adult cats. However, there is no concrete evidence that suggests that lower protein diets will necessarily slow the progression of kidney disease in cats (this debate has been going on the veterinary community for 20+ years!). If Tony is showing early stages of kidney disease, switching to a senior/mature cat diet is unlikely to cause any harm and may provide some benefit. If you do decide to change his diet, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Senior diets tend to increase protein as animals lose muscle mass as they age. You would do best to stick to diets formulated for kidney disease as they will take other factors into account such as phosphorus etc.

I think giving Sooky royal canin renal food every day is a good diet for him if he has kidney problems. There is also science diet K/D. You want a diet that is lower in phosphorus and protein to make it easier on the kidneys to digest. I would also recommend to feed canned food if possible as this helps to increase moisture in the diet and helps to flush the kidneys. I hope this helps!
