My outdoor cat has respiratory issues. What can I put in her food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 5 lbs

There is an outdoor kitty that has adopted us, and comes around every morning for breakfast (and dinner). She will not let me approach her, but she will come to me within 2 feet. I caught her in a have-a-heart trap and had her spade, She was checked over and given a shot for respiratory infection about 3 weeks ago. She has been returned to the outdoor environment but still exhibits respiratory symptoms. I can't catch her, but is there something I can put in her food that will help her?

Some antibiotics can be mixed in food and administered that way, if you're not able to catch her to give the meds directly by mouth. I would recommend calling and discussing options with the veterinarian who saw her a few weeks ago - he/she should be able to prescribe something to help. In the meantime, you could also try adding an L-lysine supplement daily to her food - this can be purchased over the counter or ordered online without a prescription, and can be helpful in treating respiratory infections in some cats.
