My dog only eats wet food and has diarrhea for 3 weeks. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

My Pekingese will only eat wet dog food and she has had diarrhea off and on for about 3 weeks. She won’t touch dry dog food, and she hates rice.

Diarrhea in dogs can be caused by: diet, parasites, bacteria, metabolic issues, IBD, stress, viruses, toxins, or neoplasia. Because Chloe has had diarrhea for several weeks now, I recommend a veterinary visit for an exam and fecal test (may include a giardia snap test) to start with and see if the cause of diarrhea can be found. Your veterinarian could try Chloe on a course of metronidazole for a week and prescribe her some prescription canned dog food like Hills I/D that will help clear up the diarrhea. I hope this has helped. Thank you for using pet coach.
