Is it safe to introduce an unvaccinated puppy to an older dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 month and 5 days old | 13 lbs

Luke is coming home this week. He will be five weeks old ( I know he's young to be separated from mom but we had to take him). I have a 9-year-old Shih Tzu at home and want to know if he can be around him. Luke hasn't been vaccinated yet and my other dog hasn't been vaccinated for years ( only has rabies shot ).

It would be best to keep them separate and take your older dog in for his vaccinations before they get together. The puppy can start his vaccinations between 6-8 weeks. He should be dewormed also. I would. To expose him to other dogs outside the home until he’s had at least two sets of vaccinations. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Luke.
