My dog has separation anxiety. What crate is best for long hours?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 20 lbs

I'm having trouble trying to find the proper enclosure for my dog. She seems to be having separation anxiety and she already destroyed a part of my door after only being alone for 2 hours. I'm gone for work for about 9 hrs a day so I don't want something where she wouldn't be able to move comfortably..what should I do?

I would purchase a large plastic crate. They are darker inside and harder to chew up. Dogs like a den area if they are going to be confined. Put some toys in when you leave and a chew toy so she’ll have something to do when you leave. Also playing the radio on a classical station is relaxing. When you are home leave the crate open and feed treats inside to get her used to going in and out. My dogs sleep in the crate even when I’m home, it’s their safe place. You may want to purchase an anti anxiety medication like Solliquin. This is a natural supplement to help dogs be less anxious. If that doesn’t work please get a prescription from your veterinarian. Usually once dogs get into the daily routine they relax and are fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Mia.
