My puppy won't eat puppy food. Is adult dog food safe for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 months and 4 days old | 9 lbs

How important is it to feed my puppy puppy food? I feed her a grain free chicken and rice puppy food, but she doesn’t eat it well. She will take a few bites at a time then run off to play. However, I feed her and my older dog side by side and they swapped food and she scarfed it down like she was starving. Can I just feed her the salmon and pea formula?

There should be an AAFCO statement on your dog food bag indicating who the food is made for. As long as it states “formulated for all life stages “ then it is fine to feed to the puppy. If it says something else such as for adult maintenance, then you may want to seek out an all life stages food that can be fed to both. Best of luck and Thank you for using Pet Coach.
