My dog's nail bled after grooming. Does she need emergency vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 9 days old | 9.1 lbs

I took my pet to the groomers and I've never had any issues, and I was told that my original groomer(once I got there) left on an emergency and I went to pick her up and my 9month old ducal claw was full of blood. They failed to place quick stop and they failed to stop the bleeding. I came home, cleaned it with warm water, and I places Neosporin and gauze over the wound. I also lightly wrapped her paw w/a wrap. Should I take her to the hospital?

Hello. If the nail has stopped bleeding, then just leave the gauze wrap on to protect the nail until morning. If there is blood coming through the bandage, & it has been more than a couple of hours, I would have her seen as soon as you can. She may need to have the nail bed cauterized & a stouter bandage applied. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hello. I am so sorry that Leon injured his dew claw. I am quite sure that this can wait until tomorrow to be looked at. No need to pay an extra emergency fee for something like this. Just keep the foot wrapped, but make sure your wrap is not too tight. You do not want to cut off blood circulation. Tomorrow, your veterinarian will most likely trim the nail off so if can start to regrow normally. Take care & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
