My puppy isn't eating or drinking enough. What should I feed him?

My dog is not eating enough food.. I am giving cerelac which he don't eat much.. Also not drinking enough water, and due to that I am giving little amount of milk mixed with almost four times amount of water in it, that too he don't have much.. I am required to give him 4/5 meals per day but he is not eating even two meals properly.. What should I do?

It is very concerning that a puppy of Jackie's age isn't eating much food. Cerelac is not an appropriate diet for a dog, he needs a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calcium, calories, and protein than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for him. When he's 12 months old, he will need an adult dog food. I do not recommend feeding him anymore celerac, and put him straight onto a puppy food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. As for milk, it causes GI upset in dogs, so only give him water. You can add water to his dry dog food or feed him a canned puppy food to get more water into his diet. Finally, I'd have him seen by a vet for a health check. As I said above, it is concerning that he isn't eating much, and a check with the vet is always recommended. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hello. Better than the Cerelac, you want to use a syringable product like Hill's a/d or Purina Critical Care. If your vet does not carry these, then you can purchase pureed meat baby foods as long as there is no onion or garlic. If you cannot get this, then take any canned dog or puppy food & puree it at home in a blender adding just enough water that you can push the food through a syringe without the food blocking things up. Until your puppy can eat on its own, you can give 1 cc (ml ) every hour. This is just a tiny amount of food that hopefully Goofy will not throw up. You should also syringe a couple of ccs (mls) of water every hour, too. If any of these small amounts still cause the puppy to vomit, he will probably need to be hospitalized for intravenous fluids & continuing medications to control the nausea & vomiting. But if he will hold down these tiny amounts for most of the day, you may be able to nurse him through this. Good luck & thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend canned puppy food at 5 weeks of age. You can add puppy formula to it to get him used to it for a week. I do not recommend human dairy products. The Cerelac has a lot of moisture and that is probably why he isn't drinking much. As long as he is eating, urinating and pooping he should be fine. Good luck!

Human Cerelac is not an appropriate diet for a growing puppy. He should be fed a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet-Lac. The diarrhea may be due to the diet or intestinal parasites (worms). Simba should be examined by a veterinarian. If left untreated, the diarrhea can lead to dehydration which is dangerous in puppies. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Consider a veterinary probiotic to promote gut health. You could also mix in a bit of plain yogurt if a probiotic is not available.

Hi! Can i give my puppy a cerelac meal that's actually for human babies? Is it fine? My pup is sick and won't eat any so i was wondering if cerelac would be fine?
Please make an appointment to have Star seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of her symptoms. In the mean time, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding Star small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken with some boiled white rice once it has cooled. You can also try offering her cooked extra lean ground beef and boiled potatoes. These bland foods may help settle Star's stomach. I don't recommend the cerelac, as sometimes the flavourings added can upset a dog's stomach. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach. I would not recommend feeding Cerelac long term. A nutritional supplement you can give that I recommend is called Nutrical. I would just feed a bland diet for now as outlined below. There are multiple ingredients that you can add to the bland diet as listed below. I would feed the bland diet 3-5 days past the resolution of the diarrhea and would also recommend adding in Purina Fortiflora or a probiotic similar to Fortiflora. I hope this helps! No, this is not good to give Yuki and I would not feed it to him. It's not formulated for dogs and it will not give him the nutrients he requires to grow. He should be fed a puppy formulated food only, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, PurinaProPlan, or Iams. The only liquid Yuki will need is water.

Simba is underweight for his age and breed. This puppy cereal and curd are not a balanced diet for a puppy, and it will not give him the nutrients he needs to grow properly. In addition, the lack of nutrients will lead him to be weak. He needs to be on a puppy formulated dry food only. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Please go out and buy him some puppy food now. I would also take him into a vet right away. I'm quite concerned about his weight, the fact that he won't eat food, and that he's sleeping all the time. The best thing you can do for your puppy is to feed him good quality complete puppy food by a reputed dog food brand such as Hill's Science Diet, Royal Canine or Purina or another your veterinary doctor may recommend. These foods are available at your veterinary doctor, in pet shops and over the internet. Do not feed your dog milk products or cerelac as it can cause gastrointestinal problems. Best stick with commercial puppy food as described above.

You can start now. Buy a high-quality dry food and mix it in the ratio of 1/4 dry food to 3/4 of the cerelac. Feed three times/day. If the dog is tolerating the mixture after a day or so, increase the dog food to 1/2 the total and decrease the cerelac to 1/2 half the total. Then you can give 3/4 dog food to 1/4 cerelac, and finally switch over to the dog food exclusively. I am concerned that the cerelac may not have been giving the dog the nutrients he needs. It is best to get him onto dog food as soon as possible. Watch for signs of excessive weight gain, as the dog food may cause him to put on more weight than the cerleac has. After a few months you can decrease the frequency to twice/day. I am available for consultation if you have questions or need additional help.

You could try Royal Canin puppy food and moisten it to a gruel with milk replacer or cereleac. If he still isn’t eating you should recheck with your vet to rule out parasites or infectious diseases that could be causing a decreased appetite.
