My senior dog's skin is scabbing and flaking. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 15 years and 7 months old | 5.6 lbs

Hi, for the past few months I've noticed my dogs skin has started to scab and flake, i'm concerned he may have been scratched by an animal or that it may be something a little worse, he is a 16 year old Yorkshire Terrier and apart from oral health issues he is of perfect health to my knowledge. Would you possibly be able to help me? Thank you.

It sounds like he could have a skin infection or an allergic dermatitis. You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet examine him to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/ or a corticosteroid. You could also add Free Form Snip Tips to his diet to keep his skin and coat healthy.
