My cat hisses, dog dislikes new puppy. How to make them get along?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 3 days old | 6 lbs

My cat hisses loudly at my new puppy a lot. I'm afraid if one day I'm not watching she will scratch her. My other Pekingese also doesn't like the new puppy. What can I do to make them get along? My puppy is 2 months old and my cat is about 3 years old. My other dog is about 6

I'm afraid this is quite normal behavior and will take time and patience by all to settle down. Ensure your puppy gets enough exercise and active play to focus his energy and consider puppy socialization classes

I would recommend having a safe place for rogue to be with out the new dog. This can be areas separated by baby gates. I would allow for them to communicated through gates and doors for a few day to weeks. After they get more use to each other I would increase the amount of space the dog has. I would make sure Rogue can get to the litter box and food without coming in contact or being stressed by the new dog. Sometimes cats and dogs do not get along and will not become very close. The hope is they can interact in the house together. Make sure the new dog is not chasing or playing to rough with rogue too.
