Why is my dog's eye bleeding and painful after a corneal injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 21 lbs

My dog was taken to vet 2 weeks ago and was diagnosed with scratch to cornea. He was given drops . When he came back from vet it looked more like a dent than a scratch. Today he cried out in pain and his eye started to water excessively. I patted his eye and the water is a pinky colour that suggests blood . Very worried

Ouch! Eye issues can be quite painful. Sometimes corneal ulcers start out looking like a 'dent' in the cornea, but often can become larger and even worsen quickly. There can be several reasons that some bloody discharge is present today such as residual infection (conjunctivitis) or worsening of the original ulcer. The best thing is to have Alvin's eye re-evaluated today to ensure that no serious complications are developing. Particularly any that could lead to permanent damage to the eyeball or vision capability.

Poor Alvin! I would recommend taking him back to the vet today for a recheck exam, since it sounds like the problem may be getting worse. He may need a different type of medication to treat the injury, or even surgery to help repair the damage to the eye.
