Dog's itchy, losing hair. Allergy meds help. Is it mange or allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old

Okay guys! Now I have resqued a dog! She looks like she has mange! She shakes and scratches all the time! She has lost hair on her ears belly and legs! I was told by the previous owner that she has allergies! When I give her allergy pills she doesn't scratch or shake she looks like she feels better after I give her allergy pills! If it was mange would the pills help or does it sound like she really does have allergies?

Itching due to mange will sometimes respond temporarily to steroids or antihistamines, so I'm afraid this really isn't a reliable indicator of what the problem is. Mange can diagnosed with a simple test called a skin scrape. If you're concerned, I would recommend taking Ally to your vet for an exam. He/she can do a skin scrape or other testing if needed to help determine if she does have mange or some other problem such as allergies, and make sure that she is being treated appropriately for her skin problem.
