Kitten has brown ear discharge, crusty nose. Is it ear mites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 1 day old | 10 lbs

My eight month old kitten has a brown discharge building up in his ears as well as his nose. He is also developing crust like bumps on the bridge of his nose now. The vet prescribed him an ear cleaner that I used as prescribed for two months. It didn't get any better, so I purchased an over the counter miticide. I've noticed minor improvement over the past few weeks, but he still has quite a bit of brown discharge.

Poor Leo! It could be that he has ear mites, but OTC solutions of miticides aren't as strong as the ones you get from the vet. Given that he's been suffering from these ear problems for a while, I would have him seen by a vet again tomorrow for an ear exam, and to have the vet examine the debris from his ear under the microscope. Doing this, the vet can confirm if he does have ear mites or another problem causing his symptoms so he can be treated.
