My cat has low PCV and anemia. What else could be causing this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 5.5 lbs

Feline DSH PCV 15% Test for FeLV was negative. Kidneys are fine. No toxins found in blood sample. Holding urine for long periods of time (although this could be that he has no energy to go to the toilet due to the animia) Is there anything else I should consider

Ouch poor Harry. Low PCV could be from a number of things including immune-mediated anemias, lack of blood cell production or as you checked, problems with the kidneys and erythropoetin production. If the kidneys seem functional looking toward issues that would cause auto-cell destruction may be the next step as well as possible transfusion or injection of EPO to stimulate red cell production. Checking for parasitic anemia and high parasite load may also give clues to the low PCV value. Panleukopenia, FIV and FeLV can also cause low PCV as part of the disease process. Ruling out an internal bleed somewhere may also help narrow down the cause.
