Why is my cat fearful of visitors but affectionate with family?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 6 lbs

I adopted my cat Rolo from a shelter. When I was up there he was so loveable. He is still the same but if someone comes to my door or he hears strange voice his hair stands up and he growls then hides. He is very affection with me and my daughter. He ignores my son and he plays with my hubby. Me and my daughter he wants snuggled to. Also sleeps with us and if he hears something he is on guard. Why is he like this. Never had a cat like him before.

It is not unusual for cats to be extremely wary of visitors and defensive in their own territory, or to have favorites among family members. Pheromone products and calming diets can help but are unlikely to fundamentally change the behavior you describe
