My cat always wants outside. How do I stop her free roaming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 10.8 lbs

Is there any way I can reduce my cat's free roaming desire? She wants to be outside all the time, even though I take her out for walks on a leash twice or even thrice a day. She's continuously crying to be let outside and if not, she climbs over the gate and goes on her own. So basically she's become an escape artist. I've tried ignoring her but does not really yield good results. She's very stubborn

Unfortunately now she has been out it is very difficult to blunt this natural behavior. Providing climbing toys and other distractions can help but it may be easier to keep her 100% indoor or regular free access outdoors. Many people build secure, aviary type pens to provide safe, outdoor exercise areas
