My dog throws up every night after water. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | 9 years and 9 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has been throwing up every night especially after he drinks water. A little food is present. I have tried feeding him small amounts and small amounts of water as well. I am at the point where I am getting concerned and may need to bring him to the vet.

I definitely agree that Spike needs to see a vet, and I would say that he should see a vet immediately. It's quite serious that he is throwing up every night, especially after drinking water. As a senior dog, he could get dehydrated easily if he cannot even keep down water. His vomiting could be caused by kidney disease, liver disease, a foreign body, severe GI illness, bacterial infection, toxins. or even cancer. I would have Spike seen by a vet now for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing his vomiting. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options, and he may need IV fluids for hydration. I see you live in Harveys Lake, PA. On their website, the Harveys Lake Veterinary Clinic says to call them for emergency coverage. Their number is 570-639-2345, and I would give them a call now to have Spike seen. I hope this helps and he feels better soon!

Poor Spike. I too am concerned about these symptoms. Unexplained vomiting in an older small breed dog suggests a possible kidney, liver or pancreatic problem. I would recommend taking Spike in to your vet asap for necessary baseline bloodwork which can help diagnose the underlying problem. Once we know what is happening internally, then we know what he needs to get well again. At the very least the vet can do a proper exam, get him anti-nausea medication and perhaps a bland, easily digestible diet, if all his tests come back normal. Best of luck with your pet Spike, I hope he feels better soon!
