My dog had seizures. Why do dogs get epilepsy and what are the causes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 30 lbs

A couple days ago I asked this question "My 1 year old beagle's front legs chest area have been twitching almost non stop for the past couple days she'll just sit up with her eyes low and she trys not to move her head I don't know what's wrong should I rush her to the vet ?" Last night and this morning she had a couple seizures so I rushed her to the vet and they said it might be epilepsy and gave us medicine but I forgot to ask them what could've caused this ?

I'm sorry Bently has been suffering from seizures! Seizures in dogs can be caused by many things, such as liver disease, kidney failure, brain tumors, brain trauma, pancreatic cancer, and toxins. It can also be idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause. I recommend having Bently seen by your vet for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to try to diagnose what is causing her seizures. If a cause is found, the vet can discuss if there is additional treatment that can be done in addition to the anti seizure medications.
