My new adopted cat is sneezing and lethargic. Is he sick or tired?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hey so long story. I adopted a cat on Sunday. When we got him home he was sneezing so we took him to a vet. They said the sneezing was probably some viral infection that we cant do much about and sent us home with some antibiotics and lysine treats. now we are home and for the last few hours he has seemed tired and not walking around much at all. if i pick him up and put him somewhere he will just stand there for a minute then walk slowly back to a spot to sleep. is he sick? or just tired&lazy?

Congrats on your new cat, but I'm sorry Samwis is sick! The vet is correct in that there isn't much that can be done for a viral respiratory infection, and lysine treats are a good idea, as lysine is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively.. It does sound like he's sick rather than tired and lazy. If he's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. Sometimes cats will stop eating because they can't smell their food due to congestion, so I recommend heating up really smelly wet food such as sardine or fish based to tempt him to eat. Should Samwis still be very lethargic in 24-48 hours and/or refuse to eat at all, I would have him seen by a vet again.
