My dog died suddenly. What caused his vomiting, not eating, and decline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi I have my dog who just died in the early morning today. Its an Australian cattle dog. He was 9 years old. My question is even though he is dead if I describe the symptoms he had would you be able to give me an idea of what he died of? He had been sick for three days. He would not eat or drink. He would vomit breath heavy and was losing weight rapidly I gave him pedialyte and he started drinking water but he threw it up. I was going to take him to a vet to get blood work but i was to late.

I am so sorry that your lost your dog this morning! Please accept my condolences for your loss. It could be that your dog go into something toxic causing his symptoms, he could have had a foreign body, cardiac disease, organ failure, or even cancer. Oftentimes in dogs, they have cancer and we don't even realize it until they are already extremely ill. Dogs are quite good at hiding their illness. If you'd like to know for sure what caused him to pass away, you could have your vet do a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs) on him. That might give you some answers as to the cause of his death. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss :-(
