Why is my dog straining to poop liquid? What home remedies help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My dog is still active and hyper and doesnt seem to be in any pain. But as of 3 days ago she has started to strain when using the restroom. Some liquid poo comes out each time. Yesterday she got sick to her stomach as well. She hasnt had a change in diet however she did get a small piece of beef jerky the other night. Is there anything I can do for her at home???

It sounds like Mya could be constipated. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.
