Ulcer in the mouth can be caused by various reasons in cats, calici virus would be one of the most common reasons, in some cases an antibiotic course can help, in others only teeth extraction will solve the problem. please take your cat to the vet ASAP to get him treated.

That looks more like dental disease or an infection. Both of which need to be addressed as they can be painful and lead to other health conditions within the body. Cat was seen by vet and diagnosed with mouth ulcers. Was given po antibiotics and injectable steroid. I'm guessing that it's a viral problem similar to Herpes in humans so it's incurable the vet said. I puree his canned food and tried Lysin. He still
The ulcers are likely due to feline stomatitis, or a calicivirus infection. Without evaluating him, I can't make this diagnosis and would recommend consulting with your vet for more information about his specific condition. Stomatitis is a frustrating condition and the best remedy we have is often a full mouth teeth extraction. Antibiotics and steroids can be effective in some cases, but lysine has not shown to be effective. Either way, it sounds like poor Mr. Kitty is in need of pain control and further treatment, so it's best to take him for a recheck exam by your vet, so they can prescribe the necessary medication. Unfortunately, there is nothing more you can do for him at home. Calicivirus is one of the options but it could also be an autoimmune disease. In some cases the pain killers and antibiotics are not enough and affected cats will need to undergo partial or total teeth extraction, which is kind of a last resort option but your cat will have a much better quality of life after it is done.

Calicivirus infection can cause this kind of signs and not respond to steroids. A sample obtained by a swab from the lesions can easily identify that. If negative a sample from the lesions (biopsies) is needed. Antibiotics may be needed. I would recommend to discuss these options with your veterinarian.

Ouch - yes, poor Oliver does appear to have a pretty large oral ulcer. Most of the time, these oral ulcers are caused by an eosinophilic granuloma complex, but they can be associated with ulcerated masses, such as a squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. I'm glad to hear that you're taking Oliver to his vet as soon as possible. They'll be able to examine him and will likely recommend either taking a biopsy of this lesion so that a pathologist can help to determine the cause of the lesion. Knowing the exact culprit will help to guide the treatment, which is likely to include various oral medications, such as steroids, immunosuppressants, and sometimes antibiotics. I'm really glad to hear that Oliver is still eating and acting normally at home! Until your appointment, you may want to offer him canned food (if you aren't already), as this may be more comfortable for him to eat than dry food. Ouch, that must be very painful to Frankee and the kitten. There are a couple of reasons why they may have both developed these ulcers, and they include nutritional (protein - calorie malnutrition, riboflavin deficiency), infection (FeLV, FIV, calicivirus, herpes virus), toxins, foreign body, or electric cord shock. I would take them both into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam, as it's concerning that they are both showing the same symptoms. It will also be painful for them to eat, and cats should not go long without eating or they end up at risk of developing a fatty liver. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and any other tests they deem necessary. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment with you. I would offer them both gently warmed wet food tonight to tempt them to eat.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the picture in your description I would not think this is feline calicivirus. Feline calicivirus is mainly manifested as upper respiratory symptoms. I would think that this is an ulceration due to a complex disease associated with the immune system. Cats can develop ulcers on the lips due to a disease called eosinophilic granuloma complex. Many times these ulcers in the lips are due to an allergic response. If you are using plastic bowls to feed from I would switch to ceramic or metal to help prevent this. If you are already using ceramic or metal bowls then this may have been any different allergy trigger from the environment. Many times treatment with a steroid will help resolve this and sometimes this will only pop up once during the year or several times. If this is not getting any better or it is worsening I would suggest having your veterinarian take a look at this to recommend the most appropriate treat

There are some viral infections in cars that can cause ulcerations on the tongue. A common one on cats is called calicivirus. This virus can be carried by very healthy cats and only cause a flare-up during times of stress, such as a big move. This virus cannot be transferred to humans or dogs, but is contagious amongst cats, especially younget ones (as older cats get continually vaccinated against this). If he is eating and otherwise acting fine, there is not much that can be done. However, if he stops eating/drinking or develops nasal or eye discharge, you should consider taking him in to your veterinarian.

I would recommend taking your cat to the vet to be examined. Common treatments include immune modulating drugs, like steroids or cyclosporine, antibiotics to prevent the infection from getting worse, and a hypoallergenic diet. It is also important that your cat be on flea medication because a flea allergy can contribute to this as well. This condition can usually be well controlled with medication and diet change. Unfortunately there is no topical numbing oral solution for cats that I know of but something such as Sucralfate may help alleviate the ulcerations inside of the mouth. I would discuss this with a veterinarian as you will need a prescription to get Sucralfate. If she has stomatitis, she may need to have all of her teeth removed to help resolve this problem.
