Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 22 lbs
I am fostering an over weight cat for an animal shelter. He has been put on a special diet by a vet. He started the diet 2 weeks ago, weighing 20.4 lbs. I took him for his first weigh-in yesterday and he has actually GAINED 2 pounds. How can that be? The diet he is on is 3/8 cup Science Diet metabolic diet dry food plus 7/8 of a can of Science Diet metabolic diet canned food. That's his total food intake for the day.

If he gained, he's still taking in more calories than he is expending. Discuss decreasing amounts fed with your veterinarian. Adjust the diet accordingly. Increase Oscar's activity if possible. This can be done through interactive play and toys.
