Why does my rescue dog have hair loss, rash, and mild itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed

Hello I got a rescue dog yesterday.she is less than a year old and has been in a crate for most of her time. She has hair loss on her hind legs and a brown scabby rash on her tummy. She itches a little but not much. Do you think this is due to dry skin and being shut in a cage or possible mites? I have another dog so don't want anything being passed to him. They are both yorkies.

She could have a bacterial skin infection, allergic dermatitis, fleas, mites, ringworm, etc. It would be best to have a vet take a look at her to determine the cause. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, or culture to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to help treat the problem. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, coritcosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause. Bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo, like HyLyt may also help.
