Why is my dog's penis swollen and he can't pee after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 45 lbs

My 1 1/2 yr old male boxer just had surgery to remove a foreign object from his colon 4 days ago. He is defacating fine, but today I noticed his penis looks swollen. He will not stop licking and doesn't seem to be urinating. Please advise, & thank you.

He may now have a urinary tract infection and I recommend you get him checked with your vet as soon as possible for an exam and labwork. Other possibilities may include urinary stones, which could cause a blockage. If his isn't urinating, this is an emergency and he needs to be seen by a vet immediately.
