Why is my cat throwing up for days and can't keep food down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 10 days old | 10 lbs

Hi, My cat has been vomitting for the past 2 days and cannot keep down food. It started with him making this low moaning sound and walking around the house and right after he'd throw up. He hasn't been making the sound as much as he was but sometimes he does. Other than throwing up he seems to be fine, he still wants attention and is playful. I am not sure what to feed him or how he can keep things down.

I would have Mayor seen by a vet immediately. It's quite serious that he hasn't been able to keep down food for the past two days. When a cat hasn't eaten or kept down food for at least three days, they can develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. Mayor could have a severe Gi illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body. He needs to see a vet now to diagnose what is causing him to vomit after eating and to prevent him from developing a fatty liver.

Poor Jerry! If he's been vomiting for four days now and isn't able to keep anything down, I'm afraid this is a serious problem. I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today to be seen. There are lots of different things that can cause vomiting in cats, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him and run some tests. Some possible causes would include liver or kidney disease, a bladder obstruction (common in male cats), an intestinal obstruction due to something he swallowed, or ingestion of something toxic. The ER veterinarian can palpate his abdomen to check for any obvious abnormalities, and will probably recommend lab work and x-rays to help diagnose the problem so Jerry can get started on appropriate treatment.
