My dog ate grass and is vomiting dark blood. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has been eating grass almost constantly, and just started vomiting. The vomit is very dark (blackish-brown) with some spots of blood and grass in it. What could be the problem?

Poor pup! It's extremely serious that he is vomiting blood, and it could be caused by eating something toxic, GI ulcers, foreign body, trauma to the GI tract, or GI tumors. Vomiting blood is a medical emergency, and your dog has to see a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.
