Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 90 lbs
My 1 year old male German Shepherd is having black tar-like diarrhea and multiple accidents a day. Each accident consists of the black tarry stool. Does he need to see a vet? I don't know what's wrong with him.

Dark, tarry stool indicates a bleed in the upper gastrointestinal tract. This could be due to ulcers in the stomach. A veterinarian can prescribe some gastro-protectants to reduce gastric acid, nausea and to coat the GI tract and soothe the mucosa. The underlying cause is the major concern. I would bring him in for an exam and your veterinarian can help develop the underlying issue. Hope he feels better!
