My cat has a wound and hair loss from food allergy. Topical solutions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 16 lbs

Cat seems to have an open wound and hair loss from scratching/itching. This recently happened from a mixture of new food, perhaps a food allergy. Are there topical remedies that can be used?

Poor guy. If this is a food allergy, then make sure to first off switch him back to his original food. Then you can try shaving the hair around the wound and cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water. If the wound resembles a "hot spot" then you can try some over the counter hot spot spray from your local pet store. However if this wound is more like a puncture, then its best to get your local vet to treat this area appropriately.

Poor Tee! This is a very severe issue and you need to get Tee in to see a vet as soon as you can. I am concerned that his skin is severely infected, and without proper treatment he may be in danger of the skin tissue actually dying and sloughing off entirely; this puts him at risk for systemic infection and other complications. Unfortunately There isn't any sufficient home remedy that I can offer for you to try. If you cannot get him to the vet today, I would recommend that you bathe him with warm water and use some dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy--its a dark brown antiseptic. Dilute it with water and gently clean the skin with cotton balls and the dilute betadine) Please get him to the vet as soon as you can. He needs medical attention.
