Why is my cat lethargic, not eating, breathing hard, and dehydrated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 14.15 lbs

Hi my cat is acting weird, he's not active anymore and isn't pooping as much as he should, and he's dehydrated. He bearily reacts to stimulation. We haven't moved houses, the enviorment is the same, nothing changed. He's been like this since Thursday. At first we thought he was just depressed but that clearly isn't the case anymore. He is also breathing hard and I saw that he had a runny nose earlier today. He's not as interested in food as he was before, too.

Unfortunately there could be a number of diseases that are causing these symptoms you're describing. Like you, I suspect that this is not depression, as this is really a rare occurrence in our pet animals. Tux could be suffering from a heart or lung condition that is making it difficult for him to breathe, or he could be in pain and that is keeping him from wanting to move. He is going to need to visit his vet urgently. A thorough physical exam will likely help to start to get to the heart of the matter, and then he will likely need some diagnostic testing, including blood work and xrays. Don't delay, he needs to be seen and get a diagnosis and treatment plan.
