My older cat is vomiting and losing weight. Is there an issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 lbs

I have an 8yr old male cat.Hes always been in good health until a few months ago when he caught ear mites which made him very poorly.I medicated his ears and 2/3 months have passed and they are nice and clean again now. I'm concerned though because for the last 3 months I would estimate,he keeps vomiting. He's not currently taking any medication and hasn't for awhile now, I haven't changed his food..he has lost weight and I think there's an underlying issue.Ive asked my vet and hes fine aparently

Poor Smudge! I would agree with you that it sounds like there is an underlying problem causing the chronic vomiting and weight loss. Some common possibilities in a cat this age would include hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease. These illnesses cannot be diagnosed from a physical exam alone, so if no testing has been done, I would definitely suggest blood work to check for these problems. Abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound may also be helpful. I would recommend taking him back to your vet for further testing, or seeking a second opinion from another vet in your area if needed.
