My cat throws up after wet food. Is she sick? What tests help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 months and 19 days old | 7.5 lbs

My cat is 11 months old and I have tried a dozen at least different cat foods. She wants to eat canned but throws up sometimes afterwards and dry food will just eat tiny bit if she has to. Are blood tests expensive to have to see what might be going on.

Changing food frequently can cause gastric upset with vomiting and diarrhea so you should pick a high quality food and stick with it. You could try a diet specifically made for gastrointestinal problems and see if that helps. The first test that should be done is a fecal test to make sure she doesn't have a parasite causing her problem. If that is normal than your vet can run blood-work to look for other cause. The cost really depends on the vet and your location. You could call some local vets and get an estimate for an exam, fecal test, and routine blood-work. You could also add a probiotic to her food, like Fortiflora or Proviable and see if that helps.
