Puppy pees when crating at night. How to stop this anxious behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 7 months and 9 days old | 23.5 lbs

I have a 7 month old Australian Shepherd puppy. Every night for the past couple months whenever we try to crate her for the night she squats down and pees on the floor, bed, couch, wherever she is. We always yell at her, let her outside, and put her in the cage but nothing is working and shes starting to do it more and more throughout the day. What should we do?

She could be urinating from fear or anxiety of having to go into the crate, especially if you are yelling at her before putting her in the crate. She may be associating the crate with punishment. Try to take her outside right before you want to put her in the crate so that her bladder is empty and then try to make it a positive experience by providing a treat and praise while putting her in the crate. You could also try an Adaptil collar and see if that helps any anxiety that she is having. You could also have your vet take a look at her to make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection.
